Aircraft History Built by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation (LAC) in Burbank as model 222-62-09. Constructors Number 222-5224. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-38E Lightning serial number 41-2006. On October 22, 1941 redesignated RP-38E Lightning serial number 41-2006. Wartime History Assigned to the 11th Air Force (11th AF) in Alaska. Mission History This aircraft crashed or was written off at Cold Bay Airfield. and officially condemned July 30, 1942. Wreckage After the crash, this Lightning was buried at the airfield. During 1987, parts of this aircraft were dug up by Dick Odgers. These parts were eventually used for the restoration of P-38J 42-67638 by Ed Kaleta of San Diego for Hill Aerospace Museum.
