Pilot 2nd Lt. James G. Reed, O-749062 (MIA / KIA) Medford, OR MIA December 6, 1943 MACR 1254 Aircraft History Built by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation (LAC) in Burbank. Constructors Number 222-7406. Built as P-38G-10-LO Lightning. On January 12, 1942 redesignated as F-5A-10-LO Lightning photographic reconnaissance version. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as F-5A-10-LO Lightning serial number 42-12972. Disassembled and shipped overseas to the South Pacific (SoPAC) and reassembled. Wartime History Assigned to the 13th Air Force (13th AF), 4th Photo Reconnaissance Group (4th PRG), 17th Photo Reconnaissance Squadron (17th PRS). No known nickname or nose art. When lost, engines V-1710-91 serial number 42-94329 and V-1710-89 serial number 42-30320. Mission History On December 6, 1943 at 3:05pm took off from Munda Airfield on New Georgia piloted by 2nd Lt. James G. Reed on a solo photographic and visual reconnaissance mission over southern Bougainville. The weather was clear over the target with a front east from Shortland to Segi covering the east coast of New Georgia and Kolombangara with Vella La Vella completely covered with visibility from Munda to Shortland good to fair at low altitudes with southern Bougainville was clear to .30 low cumulus clouds. Last seen on take off. When this plane failed to return it was officially listed as Missing In Action (MIA). Memorials Reed was officially declared dead on January 16 1946. He earned the Purple Heart, posthumously. He is memorialized at Manila American Cemetery on the tablets of the missing.
