P-38L Lightnings from 431st Fighter Squadron (431st FS) in four finger formation over Leyte Gulf
This photograph was taken by a F-5 Lightning flying alongside the formation.
(Center right no. 1 flight leader) P-38L 44-24155 "Eileen-Ann" Number 112 piloted by Captain Fred Champlin in the flight leader no. 1 position leading the formation. On January 7, 1945 piloted by Major Thomas B. McGuire, Jr. on a fighter sweep and lost over Negros and crashed.

(Center upper no. 3 element leader) P-38L "Doots" 44-24876 Number 122 flying as the element leader no. 3 position. On January 7, 1945 piloted by Captain Edwin R. Weaver on a fighter sweep and lost over Negros.
(Upper right no. 4 element wingman) P-38L unidentified.
