Pilot F/O Charles E. Shannon, Jr., T-007705 (MIA / KIA) WV MIA May 29, 1945 MACR 14540 Aircraft History Built by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation (LAC) in Burbank. Constructors Number 422-5957. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-38L-1-LO Lightning serial number 44-24953. Converted into a F-5E-4-LO Lightning photographic reconnaissance version. Disassembled and shipped overseas and reassembled. Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force, 6th Photographic Reconnaissance Group (6th PRG), 25th Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron. No known nose art or nickname. Equipped with K-17 and K-18 aerial cameras. Mission History On May 29, 1945 took off from McGuire Airfield (San Jose) on Leyte piloted by F/O Charles E. Shannon, Jr. on a photo reconnaissance mission over Indo China (Vietnam). Weather was scattered cumulus clouds at 25,000' with 4/10th coverage. Last contact was ninety miles south of Palawan with 15 minutes of fuel remaining. When this aircraft failed to return it was officially listed as Missing In Action (MIA). Search After being reported missing, search missions were flown by other F-5s during the same day and more searches on May 30th. No sighting were made. Memorials Shannon was officially declared dead the day of the mission. He earned the Purple Heart, posthumously. Shannon is memorialized at Manila American Cemetery on the tablets of the missing.
