Pilot 2nd Lt Francis J. Hill, O-763191 (MIA / KIA) WA Crashed January 31, 1945 MACR none Aircraft History Built by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation (LAC) in Burbank. This aircraft was unpainted in a natural aluminum finish. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-38L-5-LO Lightning serial number 44-25427. Disassembled and shipped overseas to the South West Pacific Area (SWPA) and reassembled. Wartime History Assigned to 5th Air Force (5th AF), 49th Fighter Group (49th FG), 8th Fighter Squadron (8th FS). No known nose art or nickname. Mission History On January 31, 1945 took off from San Jose Airfield (McGuire Drome) on Mindoro Island piloted by 2nd Lt Francis J. Hill on a mission and crashed near Batangas on southern Luzon. When this aircraft failed to return it was officially listed as Missing In Action (MIA). Memorials Hill was officially declared dead the day of the mission. He is memorialized at Manila American Cemetery on the tablets of the missing. Relatives Mike Hill (son) adds: "I''ve found the crash site, but was wondering about your research, specifically roster of pilots flying that day. Trying to find who his wingman was."
