Aircraft History Built by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation (LAC) in Burbank. Constructors Number 422-8187. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-38L-5-LO Lightning serial number 44-27183. At the factory, converted to an F-5G-6-LO photographic reconnaissance version, one of sixty-three P-38L-5-LO models converted. Postwar Sold as war surplus. In May 1946 purchased by Kargl Aerial Surveys in Midland, Texas and registered as N53753 and later NC62441. During December 1947, sold to Aero Exploration Company in Tulsa, OK. In January 1953 sold to Mark Hurd Aerial Surveys in Minneapolis, MN and registered as N501MH. On May 24, 1965 sold to Pacific Aerial Surveys in Seattle, WA and later that year registered as N517PA.On May 21, 1969 sold to Wally D. Peterson in Manson, WA. On August 27, 1971 sold to I. N. Burchinall, Jr. in Paris, TX. On April 3, 1973 sold to David M. Boyd in Tulsa, OK and rebuilt and registered as N5596V. On February 28, 1981 sold to N. Merrill Wien Richard A. Wein in Fairbanks, AK registered as N517PA and was based at Chino Airport. Display In 1990, acquired by the Yanks Air Museum and diplayed at the museum. The left and right side of the nose has the nose art of Walt Disney Donald Duck wearing flight gear including a helmet, goggles and scarf operating a camera while seated in a cloud. On August 6, 1996 registered as N718 to Charles F. Nichols of Baldwin Park, CA. References Note, some sources incorrectly state this plane is displayed at McGuire AFB, it was F-5G Lightning 44-53015.
