Aircraft History Built by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation (LAC) in Burbank. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-38 Lightning model and serial number unknown. Disassembled and shipped overseas to Australia and reassembled. Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF). Mission History This P-38 crashed on Kirwina Island. Wreckage John Douglas adds: "The niece of an aviator wanted to find her uncle's plane crashed on Kirwina Island. It took a while to get the details from Steve Cushman [from PWD Bulletin Board] but they gradually emerged. Michael Claringbould gave some clues, and I got some more from Tim Heck. We determined the location, and the niece and Steve Cushman traveled to Kiriwina Island to visit the site, and this cherished history. I met them both in Port Moresby before they departed."
