Aircraft History
Built by Bell in Buffalo, New York. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-39N Airacobra serial number 42-8740. Disassembled and shipped overseas to the South West Pacific Area (SWPA) and reassembled.

Wartime History
Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF). No known nose art or nickname. This Airacobra operated from Tadji Airfield until abandoned.

Wreckage
Until 1974, this aircraft remained in situ at Tadji Airfield.

Recovery
During 1974, this Airacobra was recovered by Charles Darby and Monty Armstrong during a salvage operation funded by David Tallichet / Yesterday's Air Force (YAF) and moved to shore, loaded onto a barge then shipped to Lae and exported to the United States and placed into storage at Chino Airport. Later, move transported to Tulsa, OK.

Restoration
During 1990, sold to Charles F. Nichols and shipped to Yanks Air Museum at Chino Airport where the restoration to airworthy condition and painted with olive drab upper surfaces and gray lower surfaces with tail serial number 28740 [42-8740].

During 1993, began restoration to airworthy condition and took nine years of work. On August 6, 1996 registered with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as N81575 to co-owners Mr. Charles F. Nichols and Mrs. Judith A. Nichols as the Nicholas F. Charles Trustee, 13470 Dalewood Street, Baldwin Park, CA. By March 2002, the restoration was complete.

Display
Since 1990, this Airacobra is displayed at Yanks Air Museum inside the display hanger.
