The map is annotated "approximate location Lt. Thorpe was last seen" near But Airfield on the north coast of New Guinea. In fact, 2nd Lt. Robert Thorpe ditched to the north of Kairiru Island, swamp ashore and became a Prisoner Of War (POW) and was executed by the Japanese Army on May 31, 1944 and remains listed as Missing In Action (MIA).
