Pilot 1st Lt George R. Jacobs, O-682641 (MIA / KIA) Wapakoneta, OH MIA July 22, 1945 at 12:07pm MACR 14815 Aircraft History Built by Republic in Farmingdale, NY. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-47N-5-RE Thunderbolt serial number 44-88487. Disassembled and shipped to the Pacific and reassembled. Wartime History Assigned to the 7th Air Force (7th AF), 414th Fighter Group (414th FG), 413th Fighter Squadron (413th FS). No known nickname or nose art. When lost, engine R-2800-57 serial number unknown. Armed with eight .50 caliber machine guns makers unknown serial numbers listed in MACR 14815. Mission History On July 22, 1945 took off from North Field (Motoyama No. 3) on Iwo Jima piloted by 1st Lt George R. Jacobs armed with four 5" rockets as one of twenty-four P-47s on a strafing and rocket strike against Moen 1 Airfield on Moen in Truk Lagoon. Inbound, two P-47s abort the mission. The weather was 2 to 4 tenths cumulus clouds with bases at 3,000' and unlimited visibility with a 15 knot wind. After the initial strafing run, at 12:07pm this plane was likely hit by anti-aircraft fire and the right wing was observed to drop at roughly 150' to 200' and went nose down and crashed into the sea in a steep dive at approximately 300 mph roughly 4,000' off the eastern tip of Moen and Falo. After the crash was only a puff of smoke and an oil slick. While the rest of the formation turned for another run, they overflew the crash site and saw nothing on the surface only the oil slick. When this plane failed to return it was officially listed as Missing In Action (MIA). Memorials Jacobs was officially declared dead the day of the mission. He earned the Air Medal and Purple Heart, posthumously. Lynn is memorialized at Manila American Cemetery on the tablet of the missing. References NARA World War II Army Enlistment Records - Paul D.
