On August 8, 1945 took off from Ie Shima Airfield piloted by F/O Paul D. Lynn on a mission to rendezvous with B-29s an escort them over Yawata. The weather was a layer of clouds 10/10 with rain and tops at 5,000' west of Kyushu. Over the target, spotted 55-65 Japanese fighters and engaged in air combat. The enemy pilots were deemed to be not aggressive and not experienced. This was the only P-47N only long range escort mission in the Pacific War.

This plane was last seen by P-47N pilot Lt. Schmidt who observed this plane falling back in formation and loosing altitude then the canopy blew off and called to Lynn to bail out. This P-47 was observed to fire a 2 1/2 second burst and one long burst then went into a spin and crashed into the sea roughly 50 miles from Suwanose Shima with the pilot not seen bailing out. When this plane failed to return it was officially listed as Missing In Action (MIA).

Lynn was officially declared dead the day of the mission. He earned the Air Medal and Purple Heart, posthumously. Lynn is memorialized at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) on the courts of the missing, court 7. He also has a memorial marker at Weavers Cemetery in Brewton, AL.
