| Location Lat 33° 53′ 0″ N Long 130° 53′ 0″ E Kitakyushu is located in Fukuoka Prefecture in the Kyūshū Region of Kyūshū Island in Japan. At the center of Kitakyushu is Kokura. Imperial Iron and Steel Works (Yawata Steel Works) The Yawata Steel Works 八幡製鐵所 Yahata seitetsu-sho was established in 1896 as the Imperial Iron and Steel Works. During World War II, Yawata Steel Works produced roughly 24% of the rolled steel produced in Japan. In 1944, the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) identified Yawata Steel Works as an important target for strategic bombing by B-29 Superfortresses and was first targeted on June 15, 1944 until the end of the Pacific War.
