Wartime History
During World War II, Kokura was selected as the secondary target for the first atomic bomb and as the primary target for the second atomic bomb.

On August 6, 1945 Kokura was the backup target for the "Little Boy" atomic bomb dropped by B-29 "Enola Gay" 44-86292 if the primary target, Hiroshima had cloud cover.

On August 9, 1945 Kokura was the primary target for the "Fat Man". During the morning, B-29 "Enola Gay" 44-86292 conducted a weather reconnaissance mission over Kokura and reported clear skies. By the time B-29 "Bockscar" 44-27297 reached Kokura, it was obscured by smoke from the bombing of nearby Yawata and after three unsuccessful bomb runs diverted to Nagasaki the secondary target.
