Built by Republic. Delivered to the U. S. Army. Disassembled and shipped overseas to the Pacific and reassembled.
Wartime History
Assigned to the 5th Air Force, 348th Fighter Group, 340th Fighter Squadron. No known nickname or nose art.
Mission History
Took off from Noemfoor Island on a bombing mission over Kahoe on Halmahera. Shot down by anti-aircraft fire during the bomb run and crashed.
Wreckage
Post war, this crash site was visited by an Australian War Graves Unit an the pilot's remains were recovered and buried in a grave at Morotai.
Daniel Leahy adds:
"According to my research and that of Ted Darcy, the pilot is still listed as missing."
Memorials
McDougal was officially declared dead the day of the mission. He is memorialized on the tablets of the missing at Manila American Cemetery.
