Pilot 2nd Lt Miles B. McDougal, Jr., O-766586 (MIA / KIA) ME MIA September 6, 1944 MACR none Aircraft History Built by Republic. Delivered to the U.S. Army. Disassembled and shipped overseas to the Pacific and reassembled. Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 348th Fighter Group (348th FG), 340th Fighter Squadron (340th FS) "Minutemen". No known nickname or nose art. Mission History On September 6, 1944 took off from Noemfoor Island pilot 2nd Lt Miles B. McDougal, Jr. on a bombing mission over Kahoe on Halmahera. During the bomb run, this plane was shot down by anti-aircraft fire and crashed. When this plane failed to return it was officially listed as Missing In Action (MIA). Wreckage Post war, this crash site was visited by an Australian War Graves Unit an the pilot's remains were recovered and buried in a grave at Morotai. Memorials McDougal was officially declared dead the day of the mission. He earned the Air Medal and Purple Heart, posthumously. He is memorialized at Manila American Cemetery on the tablets of the missing. He also has a memorial marker at Arlington National Cemetery at Section ME Site 198.
