Aircraft History Built by Consolidated Aircraft Corporation in San Diego. Constructors Number 1402. Delivered to the U.S. Navy (USN) as PBY-5 Catalina bureau number 08468. Wartime History Delivered to the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) as Catalina IV serial number NZ4013. Assigned to No. 6 Squadron. Code XX-O. On July 6, 1943 arrived Fiji. Later, operated from Halavo Seaplane Base off Florida Island. On February 18, 1944 took off from Halavo Seaplane Base on a dumbo rescue mission to north Buka Island and landed to rescue two crew members and pick up a dead body from the crash of B-25H Mitchell 43-4???, and successfully returned them to Halavo. That same day, rescues 2nd Lt. Jack G. Morris pilot F4U Corsair 02566 who bailed out eight days earlier. No. 6 Flying Boat Squadron Royal New Zealand Air Force: Brief History "On the same day a fighter pilot who had been shot down 8 days previously was rescued from open sea by Fg Off McGrane and crew." Mission History On October 11, 1944 on take off from Segond Channel off Espiritu Santo after a "Dumbo" rescue mission and during take off water looped, damaging the starboard float. The crew escaped unhurt. Afterwards, towed by a U.S. ship but the damaged float collapsed and the aircraft capsized and sank in deep water.
