Pilot Captain Glen H. Schluckebier (survived) Utica, NB Force Landed February 3, 1945 Aircraft History Built by Douglas Aircraft Company in El Segundo. Constructors Number 6283. Delivered to the U.S. Navy (USN) as SBD-5 Dauntless bureau number 54769. Wartime History Assigned to the U. S. Marine Corps (USMC), Marine Air Group 24 (MAG-24), Marine Scout Bombing Squadron 236 (VMSB-236) "Black Panthers". No known nickname, nose art or markings. Mission History On February 3, 1945 in the morning, took off from Mangaldan Airfield piloted by Captain G. H. Schluckebier as one of nine SBD's on an air alert mission to fly a reconnaissance mission over Plaridel. Over the target, suffered a radio radio failure and turned over the flight to Lt. Ronk. Next, his plane suffered an ignition failure, possibly from small arms fire while circling Santa Meria, Bulcan Province. Force landed wheels up in a rice paddy with injury to the pilot or gunner. Rescue Immediately rescued by U.S. Army soldiers in the vicinity and flown by Piper Cub to Guimba then by truck back to Mangaldan Airfield by noon. Memorials Schluckebier died October 13, 1995. He is buried at Spring Hill Cemetery and Mausoleum in Danville, IL in block 21.
