Pilot F/Lt Geoffrey William Schaffer, RAAF 400837 (KIA / BR) Crashed August 8, 1945 Aircraft History Built by Supermarine and assigned to the Royal Navy (RN) Fleet Air Arm (FAA) as Seafire PR228. Assigned to Royal Navy Air Station Bankstown. Mission History On August 8, 1945 took off from Laverton Field on a flight bound for Bankstown Airfield after conducting drop tank trials. This Seafire crashed near Barnawartha in northern Victoria. Recovery of Remains After the crash, the remains of Shaffer was recovered by personnel from No. 11 Elementary Flying Training School (No. 11 EFTS). Memorials Schaffer is buried at the Benalla War Cemetery at plot C, row B, grave 5.
