Wartime History This aircraft crashed off the southern shore of Poporang Island into a shallow tidal area. Wreckage Most of the wreckage is covered over with sand, a few parts and pieces are visible in the water. Justin Taylan visited the site in August 2005: "Locals talk about how this American plane was shot down by anti-aircraft guns on nearby Shortland Island, and crashed into the shallow water here. They said several of the crew were killed in the crash, and bodies floated ashore. Others were captured by the Japanese and their exact fate was unknown. One villager reportedly has an engraved gold ring from one of the crew members in his possession, as it was recovered from the body by his father." Contribute
