Location Lat 12° 25' 41"S Long 130° 50' 35"E Parap Field was located in the suburb of Parap in Darwin in the Northern Territory (NT) in Australia. Also known as Parap Airfield, Parap Strip, Parap Drome, Darwin Civil Aerodrome or Ross Smith Aerodrome for nearby Ross Smith Avenue. Construction Parap Airfield was established as the Australian hub for the 1919 air race from England to Australia. RAAF units based at Parap (Darwin Civil Aerodrome) 12 Squadron (Wirraway) September 1939 - ? 34 Squadron (DH-84) formed at Darwin Civil February 23, 1942 - ? Postwar In 1945, RAAF Darwin was opened up to civil operators, so there was no longer a need for a separate civilian runway. Before the end of 1946, flight operations at Parap Airfield ceased. Today Ross Smith Avenue runs atop the former Parap Airfield runway. The wartime Qantas hangar still stands.
