| Location Wooloomanata Airfield was located 10km north-northwest of Lara in Victoria in Australia. Prewar, this location was a sheep station. Wartime History In 1939, the Australian Army hired this homestead as the "Southern Command Training School" and was also known as a "secret" airfield. In 1943, the Royal Australian Air Force hired the homestead as a pilots' and officers' mess. The Works Training Unit of the RAAF also operated from this airfield, where assembled aircraft from Adelaide were flown to Wooloomanata Airfield. During the middle of April 1943 Spitfire Mark Vc from No. 79 Squadron arrived from Laverton Field and began training to prepare for combat in the South West Pacific Area (SWPA). In the middle of May 1943 the Spitfires were flown northward to New Guinea while the ground echelon departed for Sydney where they were shipped to New Guinea. Today The property is owned by John Pettiut. Contribute
