Location Seymour Island Airfield is located on Seymour Island (South Seymour, Baltra Island, Isla Baltra) located to the northeast of Santa Cruz Island (Chaves, Indefatigable Island) in the Galápagos Islands in Galápagos Province of Ecuador. During World War II known as "Seymour Island Airfield". Today known as Seymour Airport. Wartime History During World War II the United States Army Air Force established an airfield at this location for patrols over the eastern Pacific for enemy submarines and protected the approach to Panama Canal. American units based at Seymour Island 32nd FG, 51st FS (P-40) Salinas / Talara arrives March 9, 1943 Postwar After the war the facilities were given to Ecuador. Today the island is an Ecuadorian military base. Foundations and other remains of the US base can still be seen on the island. Until 1986, Seymour Airport was the only airport serving the Galápagos until San Cristóbal Island Airport was opened. Private planes flying to the islands must fly to Baltra as it is the only airport with overnight facilities for planes. Contribute
