Location Kharagpur Airfield is located at Kharagpur in West Bengal State in eastern India. Still in use today as Kalaikunda Air Force Station (Kalaikunda AFS). Wartime History This airfield was developed as the first overseas base for the 20th AF Bomber Command with the new B-29 Superfortress. On July 7, 1944 Brigadier General LaVern G Saunders takes command. On August 29, 1944 Major General Curtis E. LeMay took command. During late February 1945, the 468th BG begins a movement to new bases on Tinian. American units based at Kharagpur 118th TRS (P-51 det) Gushkara March 1, 1944–? 20th AF HQ USA March 28, 1944–June 17, 1945 departs Okinawa 468th BG, 792rd BS (B-29) April 13, 1944–February 8, 45 departs Tinian 468th BG, 793rd BS (B-29) April 13, 1944–February 8, 45 departs Tinian 468th BG, 794th BS (B-29) April 13, 1944–February 8, 45 departs Tinian 468th BG, 795th BS (B-29) April 13, 1944–October 12, 44 departs Tinian 58th BW HQ Chakulia April 23, 1944–February 8, 45 departs Hijli Today Still in use today as Kalaikunda Air Force Station used by the Indian Air Force (IAF) Eastern Air Command and the Andaman and Nicobar Command. Starting on April 1, 2019 a civilian terminal was used by Alliance Air for daily flights for Vishakapatnam and Bhubaneshwar.
