Wartime History
During the Pacific War, the Japanese Navy established a seaplane base at this location operating F1M2 Pete and A6M2-N Rufe seaplanes. In response, the Japanese increased anti-aircraft defenses in the area but were unable to defend the airspace.  By June 1943, the remaining aircraft were evacuated.
