Wartime History
During 1945, Kanoya Airfield was used to launch kamikaze attacks. After taking off from Kanoya Airfield, a total of 829 kamikaze pilots were killed on missions to attack U.S. Navy warships off Japan and Okinawa.

On March 21, 1945 at 11:00am two C6N1 Myrts took off from Kanoya Airfield to locate and shadow U.S. Navy (USN) Task Force 58 (TF 58) off Japan. They find the Americans roughly 360 miles south-southeast of Kanoya. In response, the fist Kikusui (Floating Chrysanthemum) kamikaze mission is ordered by Vice Admiral Matome Ugaki using the MXY7 Ohka (Baka). Eighteen G4M2 Bettys including fifteen with Ohka took off from Kanoya Airfield escorted by Zeros. Thirty miles away, all eighteen Bettys were shot down before they could launch their Ohka. In total, the operation costs 137 air crew and all 15 Ohka pilots.
