Location Located in western Manchuria, 8km north of Uzur Nur, near Nomonhan approximately 12km east of the border with Mongolia. Known to Japanese as "Arai" or "Aral". Known to the Russians as "Alay". Between 1933 to 1945 located in Manchukuo (Manchuria). Today located in Hulunbuir Province in China. Construction Built by the Japanese during 1939. Wartime History During the Battle of Khalkhin Gol / Nomonhan Incident this airfield was the nearest Japanese airfield to the frontline. Japanese units based at Alay Airfield 24th Sentai, 1st Chutai (Ki-27) In late July 1939, Soviet reconnaissance aircraft observed nine Japanese aircraft and five bombers parked at Arai Airfield. On July 29, 1939 at dawn, twenty-sevel I-16 fighters from the 22nd iap (Air Regiment) led by Mayor Grigoriy Kravchenko flying in three eskadrylya make a strafing attack at low level. In the first pass, they claimed a Ki-27 set fire, then made three other passes, then depart. Next, at 9:40 more fighters returned 10 x I-15 and made six passes and caught more Ki-27s on the ground. In total, Japanese lost ten aircraft on the ground and two Ki-27 shot down in the air, including C. O. Captain Saiji Kani (9 victories) and 2nd Lt Shoichi Suzuki (17 victories). Due to this attack, the 24th Sentai, 1st Chutai’s aircraft strength was cut in half. Today Disused since the war.
