Location
Hulunbuir Province is located in northern China. To the west is the border with Mongolia. To the west and north is the border with Russia. Between 1932–1945 part of the Empire of Manchukuo. During the Japanese occupation of Mancuria known as Hsingan, Xing'an or Barga. Today known as Hulunbuir Province (Hulun Buir Province) in the Inner Mongolia (Nei Mongol Autonomous Region (NMAR) of the People's Republic of China (PRC). Today the population is now estimated to be over 80% ethnic Han Chinese.

Wartime History
During 1932, Japanese forces occupied Hailar and Manchouli and carried out mopping up operations in the Hsingan Mountains and created Hsingan Anto (Province) as an administrative sub-division of Japanese-controlled Manchukuo. In 1935, the population of Hsingan was estimated at 965,000 and predominantly ethnically Mongol, and was administered by a local Mongol prince (under supervision of a Japanese resident supervisor).

Hsingan Province that included western Heilongjiang Province and part of northwest Liaoning Province. Hsingan (興安省) was named for the Greater Khingan Mountains. Another name for the area was "Barga", which is also the name used for the eastern part of the province, the Barga District.

Hsingan was the site of a number of clashes in the Soviet-Japanese Border Wars, most notably the Nomonhan Incident / Battle of Khalkin Gol between the Japanese Kwantung Army and Manchukuo Imperial Army forces versus Soviet and Mongolian forces during May-to September 1939.

During 1939-1943, the province was divided into four provinces: Hsingan North, Hsingan East, Hsingan South and Hsingan West. During 1943, the four provinces were reunited into a Xing'an Consolidated Province (興安総省).

Postwar
Annexated by China after the war, the Kuomintang continued to recognize the area as Hsingan Province, with Hailar as the provincial capital. Since 1949, part of the People's Republic of China (PRC).
