Location In early 1939, an unimproved sand and grass road able to handle wheeled traffic spanned from Hailar to Chiangchunmiao, used during the Battle of Khalkhin Gol / Nomonhan Incident. The "Nomonhan Road" spanned from Chianghunmiao to Nomonhan, capable of supporting vehicles and tanks. This road passed Nomonhan, north of the Khalastin Gol (Holstien River) and contunes to the Kawamata Bridge spanning the Khalkhin Gol (Halha River). In the late 1930s, Chianghunmiao was a small hamlet with several dozen yerts (gerts) huts. Wartime History On June 22-24, 1939, probed by Soviet armored cars and infantry. The Japanese repulsed their attack and managed to knock out more than ten attacking vehicles and killed roughly fifty infantry. At night, the vehicles withdrew to resupply and artillery bombardment the Japanese. The Japanese lost six killed and twenty wounded, and their intelligence determined that the attackers were Soviets, not weaker Mongolian forces as they expected. During mid-August, the 6th Army Headquarters was located south of Chianghunmiao. Also, 7th Division's 14th Infantry Brigade commanded by Major Morita arrived from Tsitsihar to Chianghunmiao. On September 20, 1939 a memorial service with conducted at Chianghunmiao with a minute of silence for the war dead at 2pm, and representatives from every company that participated in the battle present.
