In early March 2026, officials in Daraga (Locsin) began discussions with locals to purchase agricultural land to become the 490 acre area where the future airport would be constructed.

During July 2007, the Department of Transportation and Communications was ordered to fast track the approvals under the administration of President Gloria Macapagal Arroy. The new airport was scheduled to open in 2014 but was delayed and by July 2017 was less than halfway completed with a groundbreaking ceremony on December 8, 2016.
