Location Lat 13° 57' 18N Long 121° 7' 30E Lipa Airfield is located two miles west of Lipa. Mount Makulot is to the east. Prewar, the area was a sugar cane plantation. Also known as "Old Lipa", "West Lipa" or "Lipa Air Base". Construction Built by the U.S. Army prior to the Pacific War. Wartime History On December 22, 1941 personnel from 27th Bombardment Group (27th BG), 16th Bombardment Squadron (16th BS) from Fort William McKinley to Lipa until December 25, 1942 departs to Cabcaben Airfield. During early 1942, occupied by elements of the Japanese Army 16th Division commanded by General Morioka. During the Japanese occupation, Lipa Airfield was repaired and expanded by the Japanese. American missions against Lipa December 22, 1944–March 21, 1945 TBM-1C Avenger Bureau Number 46355 Pilot Ballantine, Jr. MIA November 19, 1944 exploded over the runway Postwar On April 12, 1948 President Manuel Roxas renamed Lipa Air Base to Fernando Field, and later Fernando Air Base. Named in honor of Philippine aviation pioneer, Philippines Army Air Corps (PAAC) Lt Col Basilio Fernando who flew prior to the Pacific War. In 1952, Fernando Air Base became a training base for the Philippine Air Force (PAF), 100th Training Wing and other supporting units and used to train Philippine aviators including an Air Force Flying School, Technical Training Center, and NCO Academy and used until September 22, 1999. Today Still in use today as a military airfield known as "Fernando Air Base" or "Fernando AB". Airport code: ICAO: RPUL. The single runway is oriented 21/03 and measures 4,953' x 148' with a PEM surface (Partially Concrete, Asphalt or Bitumen-bound Macadam). References Index to Air Bases - Research Report No. 85, I.G.
