Location Buka Seaplane Base was located at Buka Passage off the southern end of Buka Island, Sohano Island and Bonis off the northern tip of Bougainville. Also known as Buka Passage Seaplane Base or Sohano Seaplane Base. Wartime History On March 9, 1942 occupied by the Japanese. Afterwards, Buka Passage was used as a forward base and repair facility a with moorings off Sohano Island. Used by the Japanese as a seaplane base during 1942 until the middle of 1944 by seaplanes including F1M2 Petes and E13A1 Jakes. After the Allies isolated northern Bougainville, remained in use for emergency night seaplane flights from Rabaul to Buka. American missions against Buka Passage November 16, 1943–June 10, 1944 Today Disused since the war. A pier that small boats use to this day might be associated with this former base. Contribute
