Location Lat 9° 30' 46S 147° 3' 2E Fishermans Airfield was at an elevation of 25' above sea level parallel to the northern coast of Fishermans Island (Daugo Island), along the western portion of the island. To the northeast is Port Moresby on the southern coast of New Guinea. Also known as "Fishermans Island Airfield" or "Fishermans Island Emergency Landing Group (ELS)". Construction During 1944 the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) built a single runway at this location as an emergency strip. To build the runway, the vegetation was cleared and the ground leveled. Wartime History During 1944-1945, used as an emergency airfield. On June 10, 1944 during bad weather, C-47A Dakota 42-100628 force landed next to the runway, everyone aboard survived but three nurses aboard were injured. Postwar This airfield was disused at the end of the war. In 1957, reopened as a single runway. Airport code: IATA: DGG. Fishermans Airfield was closed again in 1984. There was an aviation Non-Directional Beacon (NDB) installed at this location but it was later removed. During the 1980s, a Beechcraft King Air made an emergency landing at Fishermans Airfield then took off again. Today Little remains of the landing strip, aside from the flat, cleared area. Two wartime bunkers in the middle of the island remain. The runway is disused after the Pacific War then reopened between 1957–1984 as an emergency runway and for use by small planes. Airport code: IATA: DGG. Since 1984, the runway is disused and overgrown with kunai grass. RAAF Officer's Quarters Remains of building frames on the island.
