| Location Attu Airfield (Japanese) is located in the northern area of Attu Island in the Aleutian Island Chain (Aleutian Islands) in Alaska in the United States. The runway spanned down to the sea at the East Arm of Holtz Bay. Not to be confused with American built Attu Airfield (NAS Attu, Casco Field, Alexai Point). Construction Japanese forces began construction of a runway at this location, but was never completed. Wartime History Spotted by American aircraft from the air, this runway was bombed on several occasions. American forces did not continue any construction at this site, abandoning it in favor of Attu Airfield (Alexai Point Airfield). American missions against Attu Airfield November 7, 1942–April 17, 1943 Richard Dunn adds: "This opens the possibility that they tried to build two airfields. Per an entry of March 31, 1943 the Japanese apparently tried to keep this one secret but it was discovered by the US planes on March 26 and subsequently attacked."
