Japanese missions against Dutch Harbor
June 3-4, 1942

June 3, 1942
(IJN) Japanese aircraft carriers Junyō and Ryūjō launch 180 miles south to attack Dutch Harbor. P-40s from Cold Bay arrive ten minutes later and try to intercept them after the last wave departs. Other P-40s from Umnak are notified too late due to communication failure.

June 4, 1942
(IJN) Japanese aircraft including A6M2 Zeros ten fighters led by Lt. Yoshio Shiga, eleven D3A1 Vals from Junyō led by Lt. Zenji Abe, and eight B5N1 Kates from Ryujo attack in several waves. Two P-40s intercept four bombers just before noon over Umnak Pass and claim down three. Other P-40s intercept nine fighters; claims one. Lost is P-40E 40-598. In all, four Vals and a Zero were lost, and two P-40s.
