Location
Lat 33° 56' 33N Long 118° 24' 29W  Los Angles Airport (LAX) is located in Westchester in Los Angeles in Los Angeles County in southern California in the United States of America. To the northeast is Downtown Los Angeles. To the south is El Segundo. Formally known as Mines Field and later known as Los Angeles Airport and since 1949 Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

Construction
In 1928, the Los Angeles City Council selected 640 acres in the southern part of Westchester as the site for the city's airport, building a landing strips without any terminal buildings. Originally named "Mines Field" for William W. Mines, the real estate agent who arranged the deal. The first structure, Hangar No. 1, was erected in 1929. Mines Field was dedicated and opened as the official airport of Los Angeles in 1930, and the city purchased it to be a municipal airfield in 1937. Prior to then, the main airport for Los Angeles was the Grand Central Airport in Glendale.

Wartime History
The airport's name was officially changed to Los Angeles Airport in 1941. During the war, North American had a factory at the airfield and would fly finished aircraft off the runway. 

Postwar
In 1949, renamed Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

Today
Los Angeles International Airport is a civilian airport and is one of the world's largest airports. Airport codes: FAA: LAX ICAO: KLAX IATA: LAX. There are four runways. The first is oriented 24L/06R measures 10,285' x 150' surfaced with concrete. The second is oriented 24R/06L measures 8,925' x 150; surfaced with concrete. The third is oriented 25L/07R measures 11,096' x 200' surfaced with concrete. The fourth is oriented 25R/07L measures 12,091 x 150' surfaced with concrete.
