Location Lat 34° 3' 8N Long 118° 14' 37W Los Angeles is located at an elevation of 311' / 94m above sea level in Los Angeles County in southern California in the United States of America (USA). Also known as simply L. A. and officially known as the City of Los Angeles includes San Pedro, Long Beach, El Segundo and Burbank plus nine independent cities West Hollywood, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Culver City, Malibu, San Fernando, Calabasas, Inglewood and Avalon. Wartime History During World War II, Los Angeles was a major industrial area for the aircraft and defense industry. Also, an important staging area for soldiers, sailors and training. After the February 23, 1942 shelling by of Elwood Oil Field near Santa Barbara by Japanese submarine I-17 triggered an "invasion scare" along the West Coast. During the night of February 24-25, 1942 anti-aircraft defenses in Los Angeles exploded into action in response to an imagined invasion, later known as the "Battle of Los Angeles". During a thirty minute barrage 1,440 rounds of 3" and 37mm anti-aircraft shells were fired into the night sky, and about ten tons of shrapnel and unexploded ammunition fell over the city.
