    Johnston Island Seaplane Base Johnston Atoll USA

Lat 16°43′43″N Long 169°32′03″W  Johnston Island Seaplane Base was located on Johnston Island in Johnston Atoll in the in the United States Minor Outlying Islands of the United States of America (USA). Also known as Johnson Seaplane Base.

Construction
Starting in 1935, U. S. Navy (USN) personnel from Patrol Wing 2 (PatWing-2) began construction at Johnston Atoll to establish a seaplane base, erecting buildings and a boat landing pier on Sand Island then blasted coral to clear a 3,600' 1,097m landing area for seaplanes and flying boats.

During November 1939 more work by civilian contractors commenced on Sand Island for a seaplane base for one squadron of patrol planes with seaplane tender support. Part of the lagoon was dredged and the excavated material was used to make a seaplane parking area connected by a 2,000' / 610m causeway to Sand Island where barracks, mess hall, underground hospital, radio station, water tanks and 100' / 30m steel control tower were built. Three seaplane operating area was expanded and dredged to a depth of 8'. The largest was 11,000' x 1,000' with two other cross landing area measuring 7,000' by 800' each. In September 1941, construction of Johnson Airfield began on Johnston Island.

Wartime History
During the middle of December 1941, Johnston based two plane detachments from U.S. Navy (USN) Patrol Wing 1 (PatWing 1) and Patrol Wing 2 (PatWing 2).

On October 1, 1943 six Catalinas from Patrol Squadron 91 (VP-91) are detached to Johnson Island Seaplane Base to conduct anti-shipping patrols to support Task Force 14 (TF 14) for their strike on Wake Island.

During the Pacific War used as part of the aircraft ferry route from Hawaii to the South Pacific including regular flight operated by Naval Air Transport Service (NATS).
