Location Bomana Japanese War Cemetery at Bomana off the Bomana Road at the edge of Berry Drome (12 Mile) near Port Moresby. Also known as "Port Moresby Japanese War Cemetery". Nearby was Bomana War Cemetery (Port Moresby War Cemetery). Wartime History During early 1942, the Australian Army established a Japanese war cemetery at this location to bury the remains of enemy dead. During the war and postwar, the Australian Army Graves Service buried the remains of Japanese aviators shot down over the Port Moresby area or war dead recovered from the Kokoda Trail, Battle of the beachheads including Buna, Gona and Sananada and elsewhere in Papua New Guinea and Bougainville. Likely, this cemetery was only used during 1942 and into early 1943. Japanese burials included: Lt.
