At 10:00am Lockheed Model 10E Electra 1055 took off from Lae Airfield piloted by Amelia Earhart with navigator Fred Noonan on a flight bound for Kamakaiwi Airfield on Howland Island. Although the plane was in radio contact with the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) cutter USCG Itasca, the plane never reached the destination and went missing.
