Background
Amelia Mary Earhart was born born July 24, 1897 to parents Samuel Stanton “Edwin” Earhart and Amelia Jane “Amy” Otis Earhart in Atchison, Kansas. Known as simply Amelia Earhart. Her younger sister, Grace Muriel Earhart Morrissey born December 29, 1899.

On February 7, 1931 married George Palmer Putnam in Noank, New London, Connecticut.

Fate
On July 2, 1937 at 10:00am Model 10 Electra 1055 piloted by Amelia Earhart with navigator Fred Noonan took off from Lae Airfield on the north coast of the Territory of New Guinea (today Papua New Guinea) attempting to become the first female pilot to circumnavigate the world on a flight bound for Kamakaiwi Airfield on Howland Island and was never seen again.

Memorials
Earhart went missing and likely died on July 2, 1937 when she failed to reach Howland Island. Officially, she was declared dead on January 5, 1939 at age 41 in absentia and missing since July 2, 1937.

The Earhart Light (Howland Island Light) on Howland Island is named in her honor.

Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC), Légion d'honneur, National Aviation Hall of Fame and National Women's Hall of Fame.
