MONDAY, 29 JUNE 1942

China: Chiang Kai-shek, meeting with Gen Stilwell, makes 3 demands "essential for the maintenance of the China Theater of War": 3 U.S. divs, 500-plane air force in China, monthly transportation by air of 5,000 tons of supplies into China.

CHINA-BURMA-INDIA (10th Air Force): Colonel Robert C. Oliver assumes command of the X Air Service Command. 9th Bombardment Squadron (Heavy), 7th Bombardment Group (attached to USAMEAF) departs India for Palestine with B-17s. Ground echelon leaves from Allahabad and air echelon leaves from Baumrauli, India.

SOUTHWEST PACIFIC AREA (SWPA, 5th Air Force): During the night of June 28-29 B-17s hit Lakunai Airfield and Lae Airfield. 35th Fighter Squadron, 8th Fighter Group moves from Port Moresby to Woodstock with P-39s.

U.S. Army: Compny E, 46th Engineers arrives in Milne Bay to begin work on base.

Adm King proposes to Joint Chiefs of Staff that Adm Ghormley command offensive to seize the southern Solomon Islands and that Gen MacArthur control moves against New Guinea and New Britain. This is a compromise on the question of whether the planned offensive in the Pacific shall be controlled by the Navy or Army.
