SUNDAY, 29 AUGUST 1943
CHINA (Fourteenth Air Force): Nine B-25s, with fighter escort, bomb the airfield
at Chingmen, China.
SOUTHWEST PACIFIC THEATER OF OPERATIONS (Fifth Air Force): 35 B-24s, escorted by 44 P-38's, strike Wewak Airfield and Boram Airfield. Lost is B-24D "Pete The Carrier" 42-40920 (MIA). Also, 48 B-25's
and 2 B-17's bomb and strafe Alexishafen and Bogadjim areas. A-20's hit
dumps at Gasmata. B-24's bomb Babo and Adodo in the Moluccas Islands.
U.S. Army: On Arundel Island patrols from 172d Infantry Regiment, 43rd Division advance up the east and west coast without opposition. RCT 35 of 25th Div is ordered to secure a radar site on northeast Vella Lavella near Kokolope Bay where patrols have observed considerable enemy activity.
USMC: 1st Marine Raider Regiment and the 4th Raider Battalion that departed Enogai yesterday return to Guadalcanal.
Battery A of the 9th Defense Battalion with 155mm howitzers emplaced on Viru Plantation roughly 7,000 yards northwest of Munda commence fire on Kolombangara Island.
