Location Shemya Island is a two miles by four miles in the Semichi Island Group (Semichi Islands) in the Aleutian Island Chain (Aleutian Islands) in Alaska in the United States. Shemya Island is located 35 miles east of Attu Island. To the west is Nizki Island and Alaid Island. Wartime History At one time, Japanese forces intended to occupy Shemya, but the landing was called off. On May 29, 1943 after Attu Island was declared secured, the U.S. Army landed on Shemya and began construction of Shemya Airfield.
