Location Lat 6° 7' 45" S Long 154° 57' 19" E Atsinima Bay borders the western coast of Bougainville Island. To the east is Koromokina Lagoon and beyond is the cone of volcano Mount Bagana. To the southeast is Empress Augusta Bay. Prewar and during the Pacific War, part of Kieta District in the Territory of New Guinea and considered part of the North Solomons, Northern Solomons. During 1975 became Bougainville Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). On June 25, 2002 became part of Torokina Rural LLG, South Bougainville District, Autonomous Region of Bougainville (AROB). Wartime History On November 7, 1943 after midnight, the Japanese landing unit: Amagiri, Fumizuki, Uzuki and Yunagi use 21 barges to land 475 Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) soldiers from the 17th Division, 53rd Infantry Regiment and 54th Infantry Regiment without opposition in Atsinima Bay near the mouth of the Laruma River and Koromokina Lagoon on western Bougainville. Landing in the dark in heavy surf, the Japanese unload over a wide area and afterwards the destroyers withdraw without opposition. Although the U.S. forces spotted the landing craft they incorrectly believed they were American reinforcements as the Japanese landed in roughly the same area designated Red 2 and Red 3 at the left flank (north) where U.S. Marines landed a week earlier on November 1, 1943.
