Location
Sau Island is located to the northwest of Green Island Atoll in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (Bougainville Province) in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Also known as Sale Island. To the east is Pinipel Island. To the southeast is the northwest tip of Green Island Atoll including Belil Island, Sirot Island and Nissan Island which are roughly a half mile away.
Wartime History
Following the Allied amphibous landings on Nissan Island on February 15, 1944 some of the defending Japanese fled Green Island Atoll and managed to reach Sau Island. Sau Island
was never occupied by the Allied forces.
