| Location Lat 20° 7' 38N Long 93° 27' 23E Kangaw is located in Rakhine State on the western coast of Burma (Myanmar). Offshore to the west is Akyab Island (Sittwe). Also known as Kangow. Wartime History On January 22, 1945 at 1:00pm, elements of the 3rd Commando Brigade made an amphibious landing two miles south of Kangaw, landing without any bombardment to achieve surprise. Hill 170 Hill feature 700 yards long, 300 yards wide with a 1,000' elevation. Codenamed "Brighton". Hill 170 was the objective of the No. 1 Commandos, supported by No. 5 Commando. Nearby, No 42 (Royal Marine) Commando secured the beachhead between two tidal creeks which were codenamed "Thames" and "Mersey". To the east of Hill 170, No. 44 (Royal Marine) Commando's objectives were two valleys codenamed "Milford" secured the day of the landing and "Pinner" the next day. Each of these objectives were secured with only minimal Japanese resistance. During the night of January 23-24 1945, Japanese forces attacked "Pinner" with an artillery barrage sustained for four days. On January 26, 1945 the 51st Indian Infantry Brigade with the 19th Lancers operating M4 Sherman tanks landed to relieve the No. 44 (Royal Marine) Commando at "Milford" and "Pinner". On the night of 28/29 January, 51st Brigade attacked Kangaw and two heights codenamed "Perth" and "Melrose" which dominated the road east from Kangow, but they only partially achieved their objectives due to strong Japanese resistance but did secure the town.
