Location Woleai Island is the largest island in Woleai Atoll in Yap State in the Federated States of Micronesia. Known to the Japanese as Furarappu. Also known as Falalap or Oleai. To the southwest borders the East Lagoon. To the south is Paliau Island, connected by a causeway during the war. To the northwest is Yap Island. Wartime History Occupied by the Japanese for the duration of the Pacific War. The East Lagoon area was used as a seaplane operating area. Japanese units based on Woleai 50th Independent-Mixed-Brigade (IJA) 44th Guard Unit (IJN) 216th Construction Unit (IJN) 3 / 52 Field Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion (reorganized, disbanded at end of war) American missions against Woleai April 1, 1944–April 27, 1945 Woleai Airfield Japanese built airfield Woleai Seaplane Base Seaplane anchorage in East Lagoon bordering Woleai Island to the northeast. Today Woleai is accessible by plane or boat from Yap. Permission is necessary to visit Woleai and other outer islands in Yap State a month prior to visiting with the Special Assistant for Outer Islands Affairs at Colonia.
