Location The Lembeh Strait separates Bitung on the northeast arm of Sulawesi (Celebes) to the west and Lembeh Island (Lahben) to the east. Also known as Lahben Strait. Prewar and during the Pacific War part of the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). Today part of Indonesia. Wartime History During the Japanese occupation of the Netherlands East Indies (NEI), used by the Japanese as an anchorage. On August 24, 1944 anchored was Minelayer Itsukushima that was damaged by a near miss from a B-25 strafer 345th Bomb Group (345th BG) skip bomb. On September 2, 1944 again targeted by B-25 strafers from 345th BG and fired an intense anti-aircraft barrage that shot down B-25D "Mexican Spitfire" 41-30592 that ditched northeast of Lembeh Strait and damaged B-25D "The Wolf Pack" 41-30034 and B-25D "Avoca Avenger" 41-30161.
