Wartime History
During early 1942, occupied by the Japanese until the official surrender of Japan in September 1945. During the Pacific War, used by the Japanese as a rest and recuperation area. During August 1944 to September 1944 attacked by Allied bomber and fighters and was an alternate target when bombers aborted missions against Mindanao.

On January 13, 1945 Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) P-40N Kittyhawk A29-508, P-40N Kittyhawk A29-653 and P-40N Kittyhawk A29-630 and P-40N Kittyhawk A29-635 from No. 80 Squadron took off on a ferry flight from Noemfoor Island bound for Morotai Island but overflew the destination and when the trio ran low on fuel they ditched near Karakelang Island and Maroh Island in the Talaud Islands. Afterwards, the three pilots were captured by the Japanese and became Prisoners Of War (POW) and were executed on March 23, 1945. Postwar, several Japanese faced charges in War Crime trails and were executed for this crime. On February 21, 1947 a RAAF Searcher Team led by S/L Rundle found the remains of three pilots at Beo on Karakelang Island. After the recovery of remains, all three were buried at Ambon War Cemtery.
