Location Lat 26°35′31″ N Long 127° 58′ 39″E Nago 名護市 is located at the base of the the Motobu Peninsula in the northern Yanbaru Region of Okinawa in Okinawa Prefecture in southern Japan. In Okinawan language spelled Nagu or Naguu. Today known as Nago City (Nago-shi). Borders Nago Bay to the south. Wartime History During April 1945, Nago was part of the area assigned to the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC), III Amphib Corps. On April 7, 1945 the 6th Marine Division (6th MARDIV) reached the Nago-Taira line and began a reconnaissance of the Motobu Peninsula. Afterwards, Nago became the command post for the 6th Marine Division (6th MARDIV) until the end of the battle. On April 22, 1945 a U.S. flag raising ceremony was held at 6th MARDIV command post at Nago to mark the conquest of northern Okinawa. In attendence was General Alexander A. Vandegrift, Commandant of the Marine Corps and Major General Lemuel C. Shepherd, Jr. C.O. 6th MARDIV. After the flag raising, Vandegrift said: "The Sixth Division can well be proud of its accomplishments on Okinawa... The Marine Corps proudly welcomes you to the roll of distinguished divisions that have been victorious over the Japanese wherever they have found him."
