Location The Motobu Peninsula is located in the northern Yanbaru Region of Okinawa Island in Okinawa Prefecture in southern Japan. To the east borders Yagaji Island and Kouri Island. To the west is Ie Shima and beyond the East China Sea. At the southeast corner of the peninsula is Nago bordering Nago Bay. The Yae-Take hill mass is located on the Motobu Peninsula. Wartime History By April 1945, the Motobu Peninsula was defended by the Udo Force (Kunigami Detachment) under the command of Colonel Takehiko Udo comprised of the 2nd Infantry Unit of the 44th Independent Mixed Brigade reinforced by absorbing sea-raiding suicide squadrons and remnants that opposed the initial landing. The Japanese dug in to defend Mount Yae (Mount Yaedake, Yae-Take) the highest elevation on the Motobu Peninsula. On April 1, 1945 after the U.S. landing on Okinawa, the Motobu Peninsula was part of the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC), III Amphib Corps area. On April 7, 1945 the 6th Marine Division (6th MARDIV) reached the line from Nago-Taira at base of Motobu Peninsula and begins reconnaissance of the peninsula. On April 8, 1945 the 29th Marine Regiment move forward across the base of the Motobu Peninsula and occupy Gagusuku and Yamadadobaru in search of enemy positions. On April 10, 1945 the 2d Battalion, 29th Marines, seize Unten. On April 14, 1945 the 6th Mar Div aided by aircraft, ground fire, and naval vessels, opens 2-pronged assault against Yae-Take hill mass in bitter and costly fighting. The Japanese defend with heavy and effective fire from dominating terrain. The assault is conducted by the 4th Marine Regiment attacking in an easterly direction. The 29th Marine Regiment attacks west and southwest. On April 17, 1945 the Marines capture the summit of Yae-Take ending the battle. On April 20, 1945 Motobu Peninsula is declared secure when Marines reach the north coast. On April 22, 1945 a flag raising ceremony was conducted at Nago to mark the end of the campaign in northern Okinawa. On May 2, 1945 the U.S. Army 105th Infantry Regiment and 106th Infantry Regiment are sent to relieve the 6th Marine Division.
